On Saturday, April 9, visitors to the Barnes & Noble San Pedro/410 location got a special surprise…they got a glimpse into the life and culture of a few of Central Catholic’s clubs and organizations at Central’s first English Department Book Fair.

Central Catholic’s English Department, headed up by Mr. Robert Trigilio, organized the event which featured several clubs and organizations from Central. Throughout the day, members of the Robotics Team, the Spanish Club, the Comics & Games Club, the Chess Club, JROTC, and the Mighty Button Band, shared in gaming activities and actual performances.

Store customers had an opportunity to meet ‘Brobot’, the robot that was designed and built by the Robotics team, led by Mr. Horwath. The Button Band performed for more than an hour, culminating with a rendition of “Wipeout”, led by Mr. Martinez on the drums. Col. Zink and some members of the JROTC PT team showed customers the benefits and advantages of participating in JROTC programs at Central. Señora Garcia’s Spanich Club members challenged customers to games of Scrabble in Spanish, while Mr. Rivard’s Scrabble Club had the game’s English counterpart.  The Ches Club was also there, and several very competitive games tested the strategic prowess of the players.

The event was sponsored by the English Department to benefit a scholarship fund that will be used to assist incoming freshman students that may need some financial help in order to come to Central Catholic.

This year was the first time the book fair was organized and sponsored, but it’s success ensures that next year, Central Catholic will be back again to promote this valuable and important cause.
