Messages of Mom highlight Mother-Son event

The Kahlig-Cowie Convocation Center, for the first time ever, was the venue for the annual Mother-Son luncheon held on Sunday, May 16, and was well attended by over 400 Central Catholic mothers, sons, and some alumni.

The event was highlighted by a wonderful mass delivered by Father Sean Downing, music by the Mariachis Las Alteñas, raffle prizes, a great Italian lunch catered by Guillermo’s, and poignantly meaningful messages from interim President Jason Longoria, ’96, and Mrs. Marlene Cullum, who brought a stirring and profound keynote message.

Organized by Chairwoman Tommie Galvan and Co-Chair Denise Jaros, the Mother-Son is a longstanding annual event that brings mothers and their sons together for a time of fellowship, bonding, and reflection that focuses on the importance of the incredibly important relationship between mothers and their sons. This significant relationship is exemplified by the relationship between Jesus and his mother Mary, and was an important part of the message delivered by Longoria, as he reflected on the importance of his relationship with his own mother. He shared this at the end of his message to bring home his point: “Hold on tight to your moms. Be a momma’s boy. They loved you even before they laid eyes on you and will love you to the moon and back. Our moms will always be there for us when we need them.”

The keynote message was delivered by Mrs. Marlene Cullum, whose son Noah “Seby” Cullum, ’21 was taken from us two years ago, and who would have graduated with the senior class of 2021. Her message focused on the role of a mother by emphasizing the relationship between Mary and Jesus, and the bond within the Central community. She had this to share about the importance of her message: “This community has continued to remember Seby and include our family in all of the Central Catholic traditions and big events.  We are so thankful.  This is one of my favorite Central Catholic events and not only was I included, but I was honored to have the opportunity to speak.  It was wonderful to see all the mothers and  boys and to continue to honor the traditions that make this such a special school.” She also emphasized the importance of not just mothers and sons, but all family members, making it a purpose to enjoy the time they have together.

Other committee chairs who were key players in the organizing and executing of this annual event are Tracy Fletcher, Logistics & Reservations, Annie-Rangel-Ponce, Son’s Gift Chair, Linda Catzoela, Centerpieces, Linda Iruegas, Video Chair, Pamela Rodriguez, Boutique, and Michelle Castillo, Liturgy Chair.
