Soccer team savors semi-final send-off

The Buttons played their semifinal game in Beaumont on March 2. While the result of the sudden death thriller didn’t play out the way the Buttons wanted it to, the team did experience a send-off and a lot of moral support from their classmates and supporters before the bus ride to Beaumont.

Senior and one captain of the team, Carlos Melo, shares his personal experience during the send-off. He says, “A lot of emotions run through my head before a match, especially a big one like the semifinal.” He continues, “Definitely gave myself and the team a lot of confidence knowing how many people were cheering us on and wanted to see us succeed.”

He then goes on to say, “I knew that no matter the outcome of the game that myself and the team was going to have our brothers, staff members, and alumni behind our back to support us.”

Sevastian Rodriguez is as well a senior and captain. His experience during the send off is what he described as “very happy.” He says, “Knowing that we had support added to the motivation that I already had going into the game.”

For both captains, this was their final game in a Button uniform. Both were willing to share some thoughts about that and what their soccer careers at Central Catholic have been like.

Melo says, “Being a senior and losing in such a close game like that, where you were so close yet so far away to the final goal is tough.” He continues, “Given the opportunity to play on varsity since my freshman year and being able to succeed since that point in winning the state championship, it was hard to lose this game… At the same time, I cherished the moment because I couldn’t forget about all the positive things I had accomplished throughout my four years, and just blessed I was given the opportunity to showcase my talent to those around me.”

Rodriguez sums up the feeling in one emotional word, which is ‘sad in the moment.’ He says, “I can proudly say that I am happy with what I accomplished throughout my career as a soccer player. Some players don’t even get the chance to win one state championship while I’ve won three out of the four years that I’ve been on varsity.” He continues, “So while this year wasn’t the desired result, I am happy with what I’ve accomplished at Central Catholic.”

Sadly, the Buttons lost a close one to Beaumont Kelly Catholic. The final score was 2-1, and while Central did not earn a 5th straight state championship, they have made program history by winning the Teas TAPPS state title for four in a row. Pretty amazing accomplishment, however you break it down. Congratulations on a great season to all coaches, staff, parents, and players!
