Central Robotics hosts FIRST Lego Qualifying competition

For a second year, the Central gymnasium served as a symbolic coliseum on Saturday the 4th, when hundreds of eighth grade gladiators, cheered on by friends, families, and team mates, fought it out for the FIRST Lego Robotics Qualifying Tournament competition, hosted by Central Catholic’s Robotics Club.

According to Mr. Horwath, the Robotics Club moderator, the event this year is a larger turnout of competitors than last year’s event. Assisting with all the logistics and judging for the competition were numerous Central students and faculty members as well.  “It was very exciting to see all the students exhibiting the spirit of friendly competition, showing gracious professionalism and “coopertition” – (a combination of the words cooperation and competition), the Core values of FIRST LEGO league. There are some awesome scientific minds being prepared for our future,” said Mrs. Martinez, CCHS Librarian and volunteer extraordinaire.

The FIRST LEGO League Qualifying Tournament hosted 24 teams from the West Division of the Alamo Region. Teams competed for advancement to the Alamo West Division Regional Championship, which will be held Sunday, March 12th, at Metzger Middle School in San Antonio. The eight teams selected to advance, due to their overall performance in the judging areas and scoring in the top 15 match scores, include:

1535 RoBuccaneers, San Antonio Academy of Texas

1536 Team Infinity, San Antonio Academy of Texas

29559 Robo Eagles, Jefferson Ms
29562 EcoBots, Rawlinson Ms
29565 THE OMNIPOTENTS, Stevenson Ms
29567 Vale Stinging Sharks, Vale Ms
29791 Girl Power, Boys & Girls Clubs of America
29838 EagleBots, Jefferson Ms

Helping as a team presentation judge during this year’s tournament was Mrs. Uriegas, English faculty member at Central Catholic. She was impressed by the commitment and caliber of the middle schoolers, and had this to say about her experience during the meet: “It was a thrill to see these young minds working together to solve problems and inspiring ideas for life-changing technology. Can’t wait to judge again next year!”
