The Central Catholic Buttons started off the season right, Friday evening, as they smashed the Kennedy Rockets 35-6. The score doesn’t reflect the full story as the Buttons had just a 7-6 lead at halftime. However, the Buttons’ came out blazing in the second half, scoring four touchdowns.  Among the most notable plays, Junior Jack Perkins scored the first touchdown of the season off of a screen pass from Senior Quarterback, Jacob Nava. Also, Senior defensive back, Mark Castillo, returned an interception for the third touchdown of the game.

Central Catholic showed off a strong backfield in the rout over the Rockets. Friday, with Senior running back, Caleb Salinas, rushing for 95 yards and scoring two touchdowns. The most dominant part of the offense has to be the offensive line which is looking stronger than ever. Quarterback Jacob Nava also had a steady game with 102 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Leading the offense in receiving yards, Jack Perkins totaled an impressive 56 yards. Overall, a opening performance for the buttons offense.

The Buttons defense showcased a hard hitting linebacker core, Senior Matt Gonzaba led the pack with eleven tackles and one fumble recovery. The Buttons defense also aroused the crowd off of the interception turned touchdown from Senior, Mark Castillo. There was no room for lift off for the Rockets at this game as they put away just six points.

A future star glistened, Friday, as Frank Wilson IV sparked on the gridiron. Wilson compiled some impressive plays which include a picture perfect pass and a blazing run down the left sideline. It’s essential to add that Wilson is just a Freshman and provides a bright light for the future of the team. Look for his role to grow as the season moves forward.

At first glance this was an impressive win for the Buttons. A win is a win, but Central did fumble around in the first half. That being said, they came out and put on a resounding show in the second half which left no doubt who was the dominant team. What’s often the case in an opening game is a lack chemistry on the field, this team did not look like so. What was displayed in the second half was a high level play that’s only going to get better. The strong Central offense competed with the Kennedy defense every play, getting closer to sealing the win. Finally, the final whistle blew, and the Central Catholic Buttons sealed the season opener with a decisive victory over the Kennedy Rockets.
