Opinion: Wordle is getting more difficult

Esteban Serrano, Lead Editor

The now-classic word game that everyone is obsessing over is ‘Wordle.’ The game was created by Josh Wardle, who originally created it for his wife. In January, the game was bought by the New York Times and now has millions of players every day.

The goal of the game is to guess a five-letter word in six tries or less, starting from scratch. Players are given clues such as a yellow square, indicating the letter is in the incorrect position, and a green square indicating the letter is in the correct position. Some have even affiliated it with the Game Show Network classic, ‘Lingo.’ Hosted by Chuck Woolery, the format consisted of a game of bingo and the word format, where players would get the first and last letter of the word and must guess it in a certain time frame.

But is the Wordle getting harder as the days transpire? Maybe so, likely so, probably so to say the least.

An article by gfinityesports.com, which has the Wordle list dating back to January 21 of this year and ending March 30, has the following list of words that regular players will likely remember:

There is a difficulty shift around ‘TROVE,’ as the words begin to get a little more difficult. Then, fast forward to ‘VIVID,’ where two consonants rarely used are seen. And most recently, this past Sunday the 27th, ‘NYMPH’ has no vowels, other than in this scenario where it is technically used as a vowel.

Typically, the goal of the first word is to get some letters to appear green, if not yellow. It is a crucial part of building the foundation to find the word. That is why I usually start with the word ‘TREAT.’ One might tell me why use a word with two of the same consonant? Well, I primarily do this for one reason- a word is almost likely to end in ‘E,’ “D,’ ‘T,’ and ‘N.’ Of course, this isn’t always the case, but I see it more often with these letters.

From here on out, the word you start out with will determine quite a bit when it comes to actually guessing the word. People who have started playing since its peak back in December are probably more likely to guess the word than newcomers. Nonetheless, the words seem to be getting harder because of the letters involved, and the odd letters that typically wouldn’t be seen, at the beginning of the words. Although a question also lies within, which is if the words are really and truly getting harder, or is the fear of competitive people losing their win streaks real as well?
