Science Department sponsors special events
April 19, 2019
This week the Central Catholic Science Department hosted two more guest speakers that were both excellent on many different levels. They were also completely different in term of topics – which shows how eclectic the sciences can be.
On Tuesday (April 16), Dr. Robert Cherry gave a thrilling presentation to around 45 Central Catholic students. Dr. Cherry is a nuclear physicist. He is also a a retired army colonel and EPA director of nuclear health. He spoke about the effects of radiation on humans and wildlife alike. He concluded with an extensive summary on Chernobyl in the Ukraine.
On Thursday (April 18), Dr. Jillian Pierucci gave a heartfelt and endearing presentation to 18 Central Catholic students on autism. Dr. Pierucci is a developmental psychologist with research experience that has taken her around the world. She is also a St. Mary’s professor. So, there is a strong likelihood that some of the participants in the symposium will have her for class at some point in the near future!
Our next science department special event will take place at Centralpalooza (on April 25) where our Astronomy instructor, Coach Brian Curran, will be heading up a Star Party for all those who are interested. That following Monday (April 29), Science Department Chair and Master Naturalist, Mr. James Bendele, will be leading a hike over at Friedrich Park. The goal of the hike is to catch a glimpse of the elusive and endangered golden-cheeked warbler (a songbird that only nests in the Texas Hill Country). Both events should be a blast!!!
For more information, feel free to give Mr. Bendele an email.
