Gurian open house provides insights into classroom instruction
Single gender classrooms offer unique teaching opportunities
October 31, 2017
Central Catholic High School again hosted the Gurian Institute for an open house on October 30 that provided parents and students valuable insights into the dynamics of the single gender classroom.
During their visit, Michael Gurian, co-founder of The Gurian Institute, and Dr. Jim Weber visited classrooms to observe some of the strategies that teachers at Central Catholic have been using to especially focus on accommodating the minds and learning characteristics of boys in a single gender classroom. Strategies such as having the boys get up and move around, using graphics and visual images during instruction, and even purposefully using music, are only some of the specific ways that teachers can more effectively manage content in the classroom. These strategies, and others, are aimed at attempting to keep the young male brain engaged, and are based on decades of research into the functioning of the brains of adults as well as boys and girls from infancy to young adulthood. The work of the Gurian Institute and its affiliates is research-driven, science-based and strategies focused.
Since teaming up with the Gurian Institute, Central Catholic has become a Center for Excellence and is working toward continuing the training that assists faculty members in becoming more focused on and aware of the needs that exist in the single gender classroom. Faculty members at Central Catholic who have gone through Gurian training and achieved certification in implementing the Gurian strategies include SFC Edward Bradford, Velma Uriegas, Don Nelson, Alex Rivard, Parker Ruby, Lilia Hernandez, and Tim Cassler.
Michael Gurian is a marriage and family counselor and a New York Times bestselling author of 28 books, including The Wonder of Boys, The Wonder of Girls, Boys and Girls Learn Differently, Saving Our Sons, The Minds of Girls, and Leadership and the Sexes. He co-founded The Gurian Institute in 1996 to provide research and training in personal and organizational transformation, with an emphasis on gender dynamics.
