Robotics Team sharpen skills at Steamworks competition
March 19, 2017
The Iron Fangs Robotics team competed in the Lone Star Central Regional competition held in Houston, March 15-18, 2017 sponsored by FIRST Robotics. 41 teams competed: 33 Texas teams, 1 Florida team, 2 Louisiana teams, 1 New Mexico team and 4 teams from Mexico. The theme of this year’s competition is Steamworks. Teams competed throughout the day in alliances of 3 teams – either Red or Blue, and each alliance works together to prepare the ‘airship’ for a long distance race. They collect fuel to build steam pressure in the boilers and install gears to engage the rotors to prepare the robots to climb aboard the airship.
Team Captain, David Martinez, along with Shiv Patel, Ricardo Salazar, Chris Hernandez, Matt Hernandez, Francisco Fabregat, Alejandro Morales, Ryan Trudell, and faculty mentors, Mr. Horwath, Dr. Vallor, and Mr. Bailey, worked hard during the event and steamed their way to place #20 in the event. Team members made adjustments to the robot after each match allowing the team and the robot to improve each time they were on the field. Although not chosen during the final alliance selection, the team gained valuable knowledge and experience and is ready to make adjustments to their robot. They will rise to the occasion at their next competition, the Alamo Regional, April 5-8, 2017 held in the Convention Center.
