Coach Green supervises at SA Food Bank.

During the first few months of the school year,  on a typical Wednesday afternoon, the astro-turf football field at Bob Benson ‘66 Stadium is filled with teenage boys sweating and practicing for their upcoming football game. But this Wednesday was different.

“The key word today is service. We play as a team, but today, we serve as a team.” These words were spoken at roughly 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday September 30, 2015 by Central Catholic head football coach L.D. Green Sr.

The football team did not have a game that week, and the coaching staff decided that the team should give back to the community on one of the afternoons. So on Wednesday, after school, the varsity football team piled into a snow white Central Catholic bus, and headed east to the San Antonio Food Bank. Their job was to sort and package certain foods, such as cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, and drinks. They were able to develop an organized system to accomplish their goal efficiently. The workspace they were in looked hectic, but was very controlled. For almost three hours the team worked diligently to get the job done, but also found a way to get it done in a fun manner. They were singing songs, dancing, and really making a night of it. No one there was unhappy, or lethargic. Everyone had a really good time.

The team finished their work roughly thirty minutes early, due to hard work, and a quick pace. All in all, the team was able to package over 6 thousand pounds of food, and over 4 thousand meals for the hungry families in and around the San Antonio areas. The night was captivated by an energetic and intense cheer of the food bank’s motto, “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope”. The room got so enthusiastic, that team captain Mauricio Ortega ripped his entire shirt open whilst screaming, “AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH”, at the top of his lungs. The team went home back to Central Catholic not only knowing that they helped a lot of people, but that they loved doing it.
