Screen-Jumper Movie Review: Encanto

Hector Nerio IV, Contributor

This was the first film I saw going back to theatres and I really enjoyed it from the plot to the art; the characters are great as well. The music is also great and it really got my feet tapping. This seemed like a fun and unique movie with characters that the audience could relate to.

The film talks about a magical family in Colombia where everyone has a gift except Mirabel,(the film’s protagonist). The Madrigal family uses these gifts to help their community, but since Mirabel doesn’t have a gift she is seen as useless by her Abuela (the Matriarch) and is relegated to the sidelines by her family and usually pitied. That is until she discovers something is going on with the magic of the family and Mirabel puts the responsibility on her shoulders to fix it.

My favorite parts of this movie were when we got to see inside the rooms of the family members. I do wish we were able to see more of the rooms of them as we were only able to see three of the family members’ rooms. My other favorite part of the movie was how they made “Casita” (The Madrigal House) a character and how it interacted with Mirabel; it kept making me wish I had that house as it seemed so helpful to the family. This film also focuses on the older child, middle child, and youngest child and how the struggles to be perfect or responsible make a person feel. And I love that the movie was able to tell a story of how generational trauma can take a toll on a family and was able to tell it in vibrant colors and animation.
