Monster Jam back in the Alamodome this weekend
January 14, 2022
It’s that time of year to grab your earplugs and race hats because touring monster truck promotion, Monster Jam, is returning to the Alamodome this weekend. It’s annual presence in San Antonio continues, as well as the promotion celebrating a huge milestone this year, and is projected to be an action-packed weekend of skill and thrill. The drivers will also be independently competing in the “red” stadium series for their qualifications at the Monster Jam World Finals later in the year.
The official press release opens with, “This. Is. MONSTER JAM™! The most action-packed motor sports experience for families in the world today roars back into Texas to ring in the New Year with an adrenaline-charged weekend at the Alamodome on Saturday, January 15 and Sunday, January 16, 2022. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Monster Jam features world-class athletes locked in intense competitions of speed and skill.”
The release adds the official lineup for the show- “The Stadium Championship Series features 12 skilled athletes fighting for the championship whileputting on a spectacle, constantly innovating and always entertaining. 12-time Monster Jam World Finals ® champion Tom Meents and Max-D™ aim to secure the series championship. Five-time Monster Jam World Finals champion Adam Anderson gets behind the wheel of the legendary black and green wrecking machine Grave Digger ® , which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Lucas Stabilizer is set to debut in 2022 driven by current Monster Jam World Finals High Jump champion Cynthia Gauthier. GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™ title holder Bryce Kenny in Great Clips Mohawk Warrior ® , Mark List in El Toro Loco ® and Todd LeDuc look to lock in the championship. Plus family rivalry pits Matt Pagliarulo driving Jester against his son Nick Pagliarulo in Kraken. Rounding out the roster is Cole Venard in The Black Pearl, Saigon Shaker driven by Ryan Disharoon, Bad Company driven by John Gordon and Jamey Garner in Over Bored claims the last spot in this epic 12 truck lineup.”
First- timer to the action Monster Jam has to offer? Blithe Wiley is an independent promoter in the San Antonio area, and spoke about what Monster Jam has to offer to crowds of those big and small. “It’s an incredibly, adrenaline-filled, action-packed, motor sports performance,” she says. “It’ll have you on the edge of your seat with incredible tricks that the trucks can do.”
These horsepower-filled machines driven by some of the best professional drivers in the world are pretty dynamic in terms of their overall size. “The trucks are 12,000 pounds,” Wiley explains. “They are ginormous. I mean, one of the tires is as tall as an average man’s height… and it’s very electrifying I think, with the performance that they put on.” Fans can expect a lot of tricks and speed in three events. The format of the competition will start with stadium racing in a bracket-style competition, with the fastest and most proficient driver coming out on top in the end. Next, one of the most recent additions to the show’s competition format is the two-wheels skills challenge. Here, drivers will perform tricks on two wheels, and the fans judge every competition. Same thing with the freestyle competition, a fan favorite at Monster Jam events.
Wiley is also stoked over an important milestone Monster Jam is celebrating while stopping here in the Alamo City. “It’s kind of important to note that this is the thirtieth anniversary of Monster Jam performing in stadiums and arenas around the country. It’s a real milestone here for us.”
The press release also mentions the Pit Party, where for $20 (price separate from ticket) fans can meet the drivers and see the trucks up close. “The popular Monster Jam Pit Party fan experience will return to San Antonio for both Saturday and Sunday events, where fans can see the massive trucks up close, meet their favorite drivers and crews, take pictures and enjoy other family-friendly fun,” it explains. “It’s a wonderful way to get an up-close experience,” says Wiley.
Aside from the trucks, there is some information regarding pandemic safety, and it’s some important information necessary if one may be headed to the dome this weekend. “We’re adhering to all local and state health and safety guidelines as well as the Alamodome,” Wiley says. She adds, “This is considered a 100% capacity event. They are not restricting the size of the audience and we just simply follow all the Alamodome’s protocols- they do not require proof of vaccination in order to attend their events, they highly recommend masks for all visitors, and they offer complimentary masks before entering the dome if you someone did not bring one. They encourage that the masks go over the nose and mouth and are removed when someone is eating and drinking. These are all recommendations.”
