As I walked through the arch of golden balloons that led to the gym, I knew that the homecoming dance was going to be spectacular. Themed after Bruno Mars’ popular song, 24k magic, the gym was full of gold decorations. Central’s student council members came up with the name 24 CC Magic for the dance, and they worked very hard to vividly decorate the gym to enhance the atmosphere. I had the honor to help plan the dance, and it was remarkable to see the efforts that made the dance memorable. We also made a music video to promote the theme (link below).

An arch of golden balloons framed the doorway and golden curtains hung from the gym doors, and they glimmered with the colorful lights of the disco ball. Two murals were also designed and painted to adorn the gym; one consisted of XXIV painted in gold letters to emphasize the 24k Magic theme, and the other was a king’s crown backdrop. The DJ also played popular music that kept the crowd on their feet.

This was my last homecoming dance as a senior, and everything that happened that day was full of excitement. I woke up around 8:00 am and hurried to Party City to inflate over 40 balloons with helium that we had to transport between two cars. We spent all morning preparing the decorations with many setbacks and improvisations like painting two huge murals and setting up 25 foot arch.  The next adrenaline rush happened around 3:00 pm as I was leaving Central; I was scheduled to pick my date up at 3:45pm, and I had not yet gotten ready. That day I experienced the fastest shower of my life. We dined at a nice restaurant as any couple would, but after dinner, we hurried to meet my parents at a party and posed for pictures with a ring-tailed lemur and a boa before going to Central. We were elected to be duke and duchess of the homecoming court, which added to the excitement. We danced all night and stayed until the last song, and it was the most enjoyable homecoming dance I had experienced.

Some students dislike dances because they feel awkward around their dates, don’t like to be in large crowds, or they don’t like the music. I felt the same way when I was an underclassmen, but I realized that the homecoming dance is a tradition that allows you to enjoy the evening with your friends.  Even if you think the DJ is playing “terrible” music, you shouldn’t let that stop you from enjoying the night. Go dance anyway and have fun even if you feel like a fool. And yeah, the homecoming dance may seem cheesy or childish, but that is the point, we are meant to enjoy one of the last social events as high schoolers.

One thing is certain, XXIV CC Magic was a success that will be a golden memory for Central Catholic students.
