Central Catholic football is back in full swing, which means one thing for the members of the brotherhood; Section R is back for another year! The loudest, proudest, and rowdiest student section in San Antonio, Section R has been dubbed one of the best student sections ever. This year, the rowdy crowd is under the new leadership of Seniors Philip Grubbs and Jake Beck, who have taken on the role of Section R leaders, and even STUCO moderator Coach Don Nelson is getting in on the action by creating a new chant for football games.

Section R leader Philip Grubbs was not a fan of football games as a freshman or sophomore, saying that he “didn’t go to any of the games.” However, that all changed when Philip received an offer to go to a game with Austin Vargas, which he accepted. Since then, he never looked back, and now leads the infamous band of brothers in cheering on the football team. His favorite chant, and many other people’s favorite chant, WIPEOUT, will be making an appearance this year, under new band leader Richard Daul. The beloved chant and dance gets the fans up on their feet, and incorporates the band to help build momentum for the boys on the field. Also, it is just a great way to keep the crowd entertained and to share the fun-filled experience. Other chants that will be used in football games include; Shoot the Zebra, You Can’t Do That, Chaminade, I Believe We Will/Just Won, and the fan-favorite songs Sweet Caroline and Hey Baby. This year, a new chant has been added to the Section R repertoire; We Are One. The chant starts with everyone slow-clapping and gaining speed until going crazy, then throwing their arms down and shouting “BOOM!” Then, led by Philip Grubbs and Jake Beck, everyone chants “We are Central!” successively louder three times, and finally scream “WE ARE ONE!” at the end. Amongst all these chants will be the typical human pyramids and track-runs after every Central touchdown. This year, Nick Legarreta and Ozzy Cuellar will be flag bearers while going on the touchdown-run.

It’s another year, and another Section R, but every year has its own unique qualities. This year, there will be new chants, new songs, and new leadership. Only time will tell how well this combination holds up, but if it is anything like every other year, this Central Catholic football season is getting the rowdiest student section in the city.
